Jenson Button: Max can give reasons

Fans and pundits continue to debate Max Verstappen’s refusal to allow teammate Sergio Perez to continue on the final lap of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. After the finish, Max said he had reasons for this, but did not express them.

2009 world champion Jenson Button is confident that if Verstappen had publicly stated these reasons, he could have avoided a negative backlash against him.

Jenson Button “I was struck by Sergio’s comments, who said he now understood what his partner really is. The situation is complicated, because we have heard the opinion of only one party, but we do not know the reasons for Max.

From the outside it doesn’t sound so good when Max says: “I won’t miss it, I have reasons for this.” Without knowing the reasons, we consider him a selfish rider who does not think about the team or the partner.

I don’t know if this is true or not, but I read in the press that Max was angry about what happened in qualifying in Monaco when the last attempt was abandoned due to Sergio hitting the wall. Perhaps he believes that the partner did not do everything he could to prevent the accident then, and that is why Max did not want to give his position back to him now.

If he missed Sergio, who is fighting for second place in the championship, he would look better. I would also like to ask Red Bull if they discussed this issue before the race or not, as Max says, and then why did they ask him to skip it?

It seems to me that the team did not properly discuss the issue before the race weekend and now they are in big trouble because from a marketing point of view this story has a negative effect on Red Bull.

They could have finished the race perfectly. After a mistake at the start of the race with Lewis, Max could have said: “Sergio, here’s some extra points for you, because we want to finish the season first and second.” It would be nice, but the reality turned out differently.”
