Sainz fears health problems due to build-up

The build-up of new generation cars at high speed on the straights is one of the main topics of discussion this season. Carlos Sainz spoke in Barcelona on Thursday about the long-term health implications of this.

Carlos Sainz: “The curbs on the circuit in Miami were too hard for the current cars and a few bumps in Imola led to painful sensations in the body. I think we need to think about the price the racer will pay with the health of his back if he has to spend his entire career on current machines.

We should start by discussing this topic. On the one hand, we have excellent rules, which gives us cars to fight with. But should our neck and back suffer because of this? For me, this is more of a philosophical question that I ask everyone in Formula 1. Perhaps it is worth rethinking whether we should pay with our health for such races.

I’m already feeling the effects of the build-up and I don’t need expert advice to understand what could happen to me after ten years of piloting such machines. I know it will be difficult for me and I will have to work more on flexibility and invest more in health.

This is one of those questions that riders don’t like to talk about because they don’t want to look weak. I’m in top shape physically and consider myself one of the strongest drivers, I’ve never had any problems in Formula 1, but who knows what will happen in the long run. I think we should bring this topic up and discuss the options.

We have to take the interests of the teams into account when overtaking for the sake of a quality show, but what happens when we take the driver’s interests into account for the first time? I think it’s going to be interesting.”
