In 2017 there was a conflict between Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen, so the riders did not speak to each other for years. In 2023, Kevin and Niko become partners in Haas, but team leader Gunther Steiner assures that all complaints are a thing of the past.
Günther Steiner: “Before I signed the contract, I had a short conversation with Kevin about Nico, but didn’t directly ask whether he liked Nico or not. We need to make sure our riders get along, but I think they already have a good relationship. I think they might as well go on vacation together. They have children about the same age. The most important thing is not to do what Kevin suggested to Niko a few years ago.
As far as I know they haven’t spoken to each other for five years, but this season they started communicating. I asked Kevin and he said he and Niko have a normal relationship.”
Steiner added that the decision to sign with Hulkenberg was postponed to the last minute to give Mick Schumacher more time to prove himself: “It was not easy to decide which option would be best for the team. The contract with Niko was only signed yesterday.
We wanted to give Mick more time and then make the best possible decision, which we did. I’ve been talking to Gene Haas constantly about what’s best for the team and last week we came to an understanding of what needs to be done.”
