Ricciardo is not yet ready to consider the upcoming race as the last

Daniel Ricciardo is almost a Formula 1 veteran: his 12th season in the World Championship is coming to an end, and in 2023 the smiling Australian will no longer start. It is possible that he will be a reserve driver for one of the teams next season, but this has not yet been confirmed.

At a press conference in Abu Dhabi, he was asked to share his memories of the first of his eight Formula 1 victories, dated June 8, 2014, when he won the Canadian Grand Prix with Red Bull Racing.

“I noticed after George Russell’s first win his head got a little bigger! Daniel joked in his own way. “In general you always have to have real confidence in yourself, be sure you can win races, but what it is you don’t realize until you climb to the top of the podium for the first time.

We have all won in the youth categories and seem to know how to win races, but when you enter the Formula 1 level, let’s say on the main stage of world motorsport, until you cross this line, you will not experience this feeling and you won’t prove to yourself that you really can – until now you just don’t know.

Of course in the days of the previous weekend I looked at George and remembered my first win. Of course I know what he’s been through and I was very happy for him because this is one of the best days in any rider’s life, after which a lot can change.

If we talk about my mood, then in general everything is fine. Let’s just say I’m not ready psychologically to consider the upcoming race the last of my career, although it can’t be ruled out that it will be one. I understand that nothing is guaranteed for me in the future, so I will just try to have fun and not express any emotions – I’d rather not think that this Grand Prix could be the last.

How things go, that’s how it will go. I will be penalized and will lose a few positions at the start, but usually I just perform better in such cases. In general, I asked to be denied five positions, but three is also normal! (laughs)

I can’t say yet what will happen after that. Some progress has been made, but nothing is decided yet. Let’s see what happens, but I hope you see me again one way or another next year.
