According to George Russell, he always believed in himself that he could succeed in Formula 1, and although he is very proud of the first victory, he is still the same driver as he was a week ago.
George Russell: “Frankly, it was not possible to really celebrate the victory on board the plane. Many of us flew on the same flight – me, Carlos Sainz, Charles Leclerc, Pierre Gasly, Kevin Magnussen, Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon, Lewis Hamilton – but I was already almost exhausted.
On Sunday night, I experienced such strong emotions, also took part in numerous interviews and celebrations with our team, and immediately afterwards I had to rush to the airport. The flight wasn’t until three in the morning and by then I was already squeezed like a lemon.
In general, after a tough race, I slept through almost the entire flight. So there were no markings yet, which we postponed until next Sunday. This weekend my whole family is with me, so we celebrate on Sunday evening.
To be honest I can’t say if I feel any changes after winning my first Grand Prix. Of course, I am very proud of this achievement, because I have worked all my life, dreaming of victories. In Formula 1 you start every race with confidence in yourself, in the fact that you can succeed. Sometimes, at the very beginning of the weekend, it becomes clear that this time, apparently, it is not destined to climb the podium, but in Brazil, the stars in the sky probably descended on me in a happy way, and everything worked out perfectly.
I always believed that I could win races, but you also have to believe that you can become champions. Of course my confidence has only grown stronger now and our win has boosted the morale of the team. But I don’t feel like something suddenly happened to me. It seems to me that I am still the same racer as I was a week ago.
In Abu Dhabi we will try to repeat the success. I think the car has been running great since Austin, maybe even better than I could have hoped. Of course Max Verstappen and Red Bull will be strong on this track. I think the combination of slow corners and long straights suits their car well. But in Brazil we saw that even on a circuit where we didn’t expect to be so competitive, we were fast.”
