At the FIA press conference in Abu Dhabi, Lewis Hamilton was asked which of the many duels with Sebastian Vettel on the World Cup circuits has stayed with him the most. When he started to answer, Sebastian intervened and they had a very interesting dialogue.
“When I think of Sebastian, I remember an unfortunate story from the past …” said the seven-time world champion after a rather long pause and laughed.
“I’m sorry to interrupt, but I have to admit that that episode in Baku in 2017 was an unpleasant moment for me, because I didn’t behave at the time,” Vettel interjected. “But actually after that incident…”
“…Our friendship has grown stronger!” — gleefully finished the sentence Lewis.
“Yes, much stronger,” confirmed Sebastian. “So I’m not ready to say I’m so sorry about what happened then, if you know what I mean.”
“I agree with you,” Hamilton continued. – To be honest, we had a lot of interesting battles. I thought a lot of riders will come back, and you probably will too. That’s why today I’m ready to admit that this is your last race, but you will be back. Not?..”
“After the press conference, we will step aside and agree that I will come back when you finish your career! – Laughing, Vettel suggested. “Maybe I want to come back then!”
Lewis said of expectations for the season finale: “It’s still hard to say, but we’re continuing to improve the car, although we don’t think Yas Marina is the most favorable track for us. According to our calculations, it fits more with other teams. But I still hope that we will not perform worse than in the previous race.”
The upcoming Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be Lewis Hamilton’s 200th racing anniversary for Mercedes, but it will be his first start on the circuit since the events of last year’s season finale when he missed out on a championship win on the final lap. However, the Mercedes driver declined to comment on this subject, making it clear that he was trying not to think about the past: “Actually, I hardly remember. I’ve had a lot of great performances at this circuit over the last few years and I even remember the very first race in Abu Dhabi in 2009, as I was in the lead even though I retired from the race.
But I try not to remember the past, all this is left behind and now I do everything I can to move forward and get the best possible results. And I don’t think at all about what could have been better in the past … “
