Formula E: major changes to the series regulations

Significant changes have been made to the World Electric Car Racing Championship regulations, which received approval from the FIA World Motorsport Council on November 18.

From the ninth season, when Formula E switches to third generation (Gen3) cars, the format of the races will change: from now on, the distance of each stage of the championship will consist of a certain number of laps, and not in the time limited, as before. It is believed this should make it easier for teams to select and apply tactics.

At the same time, the rule remains that the duration of the race will be extended if a safety car enters the track or yellow flags are declared throughout the circle. But if extra time was previously announced for this, circles will now be added after periods of neutralization.

The use of fast battery charging technologies makes it possible at some stages to enable a mode called Attack Charge. The essence of the innovation is that in these races there are mandatory 30-second pit stops, during which the teams connect the cars to special 600 kW fast charging systems. After that, all riders will have the option to activate the attack mode twice, increasing the battery power from 300 to 350 kW.

At the same time, the current rule, which allows pilots to use the default Attack Mode twice per stage, remains in effect. Together with the innovation, this will diversify racing tactics and make the battle on the track even more intense.

In addition, to make it easier for newcomers to compete in Formula E, each team must offer two training sessions during the season to drivers who have not raced in the electric series before.

Pablo MartinoChairman of the FIA Formula E Sport Commission: “Following a successful eighth season, we are making small additional changes to the race format as we aim to bring Formula E to an even wider audience and give teams the opportunity to test talented newcomers.”

The ninth season of Formula E will start on January 14 next year in Mexico City.
