Mattia Binotto tried to dispel rumors of his imminent resignation from the position of head of the Ferrari team at the FIA press conference in Abu Dhabi on Saturday – this has been talked about for a long time, but, of course, they have become much louder after the recent publication in Gazzetta dello Sport.
Mattia Binotto: “Ferrari is the most beloved team and Sebastian Vettel once said that since everyone is a fan of Ferrari, it always means there will be passionate love and criticism. That was the case in the past, it is happening now and nothing will change in the future.
When I heard about these rumours, I spoke to Ferrari president John Elkann and we decided that to put an end to all speculation it would be best to make an official statement. All these speculations are based on nothing. The main thing now is that the team is not distracted from work and there will always be rumors.
But when Binotto was asked directly if there was any certainty that he would remain at the head of the team in 2023, he replied somewhat evasively: “It’s not for me to decide, but I’m calm because I always discuss in a open and constructive manner with my senior management both immediate tasks and long term plans.
Moreover, if we analyze this season, we have to admit that there were successes and failures and we have not worked in the best way. But I think the main goal has been achieved: in the first year, when the new technical regulations came into force, we were still competitive. Nobody expected Ferrari to go so fast at the start of the championship, given how the previous seasons have gone.
The team remains united, we have shown that we are capable of a lot. There are areas where our weaknesses have manifested themselves, where we need to catch up, but we will address this and try to fix everything. Preparations for 2023 are underway at the base in Maranello, but this season has been brilliant too, if you remember how many pole positions we’ve won and what speeds we’ve shown in qualifying.
The race pace was not so good, we understand that it needs to be up, also because it is easier for our strategists to determine tactics when they are sure the car is fast.
In general, I am calm and together with the team fully focused on all the tasks we are facing right now.”
