After evaluating resources and tire wear over the weekend, Pirelli considers the strategy of two pit stops in tomorrow’s race to be the fastest.
Higher tire wear compared to last year cast doubt on the results of a pre-race computer simulation. A two-stop strategy, with an average loss of 22 seconds per tire change, is expected to be 4-5 seconds faster than a single pit stop in a race.
The two best options according to the tire industry are the start on Medium, the transition to Hard between laps 16 and 22, and the last stretch on Medium or Hard. Soft is used less frequently during the final stint as these tires are unlikely to be as effective as other compounds. The choice of teams depends on the remaining tires in stock for each rider.
Those who want to try the one pit stop strategy can start on Medium and then move up to Hard. The key role will be played by the ability to control tire wear, which determines the length of the first segment.
Other options for a one-stop strategy include switching from Soft to Hard or Hard to Soft in the hope of a safety car whose departure could seriously affect the outcome of the race.
