Charles Leclerc finished second in Abu Dhabi and guaranteed himself the title of vice world champion in 2022. For a Ferrari driver, this is the best result of his career in Formula 1.
His teammate Carlos Sainz finished fourth and moved up to fifth ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
Charles Leclerc (2nd): “I gave 110% from the first to the last round. To be honest, I had a perfect race – I don’t think I could have done better. I knew the only way to stay ahead of Sergio was to use a different strategy than him.
I kept tire wear well under control and was able to implement the one-stop strategy – I’m very happy that everything worked out.
I really hope that next season we take a step forward and fight for the title. However, given our positions last year, we have already made a very big step forward. At the end of the season we have improved on strategy, but we still need to work on race pace, because on Sunday we have more problems. We will continue to work hard during the winter break.”
Carlo Sainz (4th): “I can’t say I’m completely happy with how I’ve performed this season. The first races turned out to be too difficult even for me – for the first time in my career I found myself in a situation where I could not immediately find an approach to the car and lost two or three tenths. I had to work hard to figure out how to win back this backlog.
Charles rode really well in the first half of the season, but in the second half I found myself and found the rhythm. I hope to have speed from the first race next season.”
