Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes and Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari have had their gearboxes replaced. The document, signed by FIA Technical Delegate Joe Bauer, states the following:
On Mercedes No. 44 and Ferrari No. 16, before the 6th stage of the championship, gearbox housings and cassettes (a complete mechanism including gears, shafts, synchronizers and other rotating parts, as well as a shifting mechanism) were replaced.
In 2022, each driver will be allowed to use four gearbox housings and four cassettes (Article 29.2c of the Sporting Regulations), and these were the first replacements on both cars.
Also, for the first time, additional gearbox components were replaced at Mercedes and Ferrari – in the GBX DL category, the technical regulations include a number of different types of components that do not belong to the gearbox, but are directly related to its operation. Each rider can also use four sets of such components per season.
