Lewis Hamilton missed the finish of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, his 200th race for Mercedes, due to transmission failures, after which he said he was happy that the season – incidentally the worst of his career in all his racing years in Formula 1 – is finally over .
Hamilton took only 6th place in the individual standings, losing to his partner George Russell at the end of the championship, who finished the season in 4th place, but Toto Wolff believes that this fact does not matter.
“It doesn’t really matter because they weren’t in the race for the World Cup,” the Irish news agency RTE quoted the head of the Mercedes team as saying. “They didn’t fight for victories either, with the exception of the stage in Brazil. I don’t think there is a significant difference for any of the teams whether they finish second, third, fourth or fifth.
Last year everything was much worse – then they took the victory away from us, and this year we ourselves lost, because we did not perform well enough. You expect a seven-time world champion to conquer all rivals, but we couldn’t give him a car that could do this.
But Lewis is doing very well, he has supported us more than once during the season and shared his energy more than once, even when he was struggling himself. I have known him as a person for ten years now and this year he has shown exceptional attitude and incredible mental toughness.”
On Tuesday Lewis Hamilton will take part in tire testing at the Yas Marina circuit and this will be the last time he will have to drive a Mercedes W13 car.
