Roman Stanek won Formula 3 qualifying in Barcelona. For the Trident rider this was the best result of his career. Together with Roman, Victor Marten will start from the front row in Sunday’s race.
After the start of qualifying, almost all drivers immediately took to the track, except Marten, Rasmussen, Stanek and Maloney. They stayed in the pits for over a minute to dodge traffic before taking off for their first attempt.
The riders did two warm-up laps and only then did they start to attack. Isaac Hadjar was the first to set the fastest time, but his result was surpassed by a large group led by Chao Collet, Franco Colapinto and Victor Martin. After just one quick lap, all drivers returned to the pits.
The break lasted a few minutes, then the participants moved from qualifying to the second set of fast laps. At the same time, it was announced that Zane Maloney missed the weigh-in race. In the Bahrain stage, Kush Maini committed a similar offense for which he was banned from the qualifying protocol.
Protocol was again led by Hajjar, but as with the first attempt, Isaac was unable to stay on the front line. Alexander Smolyar showed the best time, but Victor Marten became the leader of the second attempt.
The riders re-entered the pit lane and set out six and a half minutes before the end of the session for the decisive set of laps. Not everyone managed to start on the second fastest lap, so some of the riders only had one attempt.
Roman Stanek managed to improve and rose from twelfth to first place. Victor Marten and Alexander Smolyar did not improve their times and remained second and third respectively.
The starting grid for Saturday’s race has been reversed – the riders taking the top 12 places will start in reverse tomorrow. Zane Maloney should therefore start from pole on Saturday, but if the Trident driver is disqualified, Franco Colapinto will take first place at the start.
