In 2022, post-season testing will last one day. The teams were again allowed to combine tire testing with youth testing with two cars, but when Formula 1 switched to 18-inch tires a year ago, Pirelli now simply adapted the compounds – this and cost savings reduced the testing to one day.
But the day turned out to be interesting. Several drivers changed teams at the same time – Pierre Gasly drove Alpine for the first time, Fernando Alonso made his debut in Aston Martin, Nico Hulkenberg in Haas F1. Gasly and Alonso had contracts until the end of the year, the teams agreed to release them ahead of schedule, but advertising had to be removed from the cars so as not to violate mutual obligations.
There is no point in comparing and analyzing the results, the riders worked according to their program and did not strive for the best lap time.
There were no incidents. Alonso and Norris took off in turn 13, Schwartzman turned around in 16th – with no consequences for the car. Haas F1 had problems with Hulkenberg’s car – after the finish of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Mick Schumacher was asked not to run the donuts to save the car’s life. “I love you too”, Mick replied then, but today the program is not yet fully completed.
The tests were interrupted twice by red flags. First because of McLaren debutant Oscar Piastri’s car stalling in turn seven, then because of the wreckage on the track.
The fastest time was set by Carlos Sainz, who lapped the 2023 tires in 1:25.245. The best of the young riders was, just like a year ago, Robert Schwartzman, who showed the third fastest time.
The 2022 season is over, the next time the teams will meet in New Year’s testing and with new cars – in Bahrain from February 23 to 25.
