Robert Kubica returned to the wheel of the Alfa Romeo in Barcelona on Friday, replacing Guanyu Zhou in first practice. In the second session, the team had to deal with two lead drivers, but Valtteri Bottas only managed one fast lap before coming off the track due to problems with the power plant.
Valtteri Bottas (16th): “Problems on Friday are already starting to become a pattern. Today I couldn’t work well, but every time we managed to come back and we aim for the same this weekend.
The positive results of the day include a circle on Medium tires which turned out to be very good. The car has no problems with the balance, which can be considered an excellent starting point for further work.
In the February test in Barcelona we had a lot of problems, but during this time the team has made a big step forward. We are proceeding cautiously with updates, focusing more on finding optimal settings. There is no doubt that we can get more out of the car tomorrow.”
Guanyu Zhou (17th): “Today was much more interesting than during the winter test in February, no doubt about that! I only did one workout, so I still have room to improve tomorrow. I keep looking for the limits of myself and the machine. Today we will analyze all the collected information and choose the best settings.
I’m looking forward to qualifying with confidence, but as always it’s important to avoid any problems if we want to get the most out of this weekend.”
Robert Kubica (13th in the first session): “Overall I had a good session. I’m glad I picked up the pace quickly and the feel of the car has returned to what I had in the past.
The session proved difficult compared to the Pirelli testing at Imola at the end of April, when I was last behind the wheel. Today there were different weather conditions and a different asphalt condition – in Imola there was a layer of used rubber on the track.
However, the car I drove at Imola turned out to be the best car of my career in terms of feel and ease of handling. I’m looking forward to getting behind the wheel again.”
