Haas chief Gunther Steiner cited one of the reasons why the team preferred Nico Hulkenberg over Mick Schumacher. According to Steiner, an experienced Niko will help Haas move forward more quickly.
Günther Steiner: “Mick has the potential to become a good driver. Actually, he is already a good driver, but he can get even better. But how long does it take? He grows with the team, but cannot help the team grow. And then we wondered, “What can we do about it?”
We evaluated the situation in the pilot market and saw that Niko is free. A few years ago we already talked to him about the possibility of speaking on our behalf, but before that we couldn’t agree. However, we knew that there was respect between us. He was available in the driver market but missed three seasons so we had questions about what he was capable of.
This year Niko has driven two races for Aston Martin and he did quite well. We evaluated which option is best for the team and came to the conclusion that an experienced rider will help the team progress faster. In Formula 1, everything is simple – you need to act quickly, otherwise you will lose the gained momentum and be left behind.
