Frederik Vesti, member of the Mercedes youth program, got behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car for the first time on Tuesday during a test in Abu Dhabi. The young Dane completed 124 laps and set the 22nd fastest time. Both the team and the rider were satisfied with the work done.
Frederic Vesti: “My first F1 tests were incredible – I don’t even have enough words to describe how great everything went. I drove fast corners at 260 km/h and felt g-forces from 5G on my own neck. The power of a Formula 1 car is simply incredible.
I did 124 laps on different tire compounds. It was extremely important for me to get this opportunity, which will help in the next step in my career – working in the Formula 1 simulator and in Formula 2.
I hope to be behind the wheel of Formula 1 again soon and now I am grateful to Mercedes for the opportunity.”
Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes Chief Race Engineer, commented on Vesti’s testing: “Frederik has been working hard on our simulator this year and in Abu Dhabi he had the first chance to feel the difference between a virtual and a real car. He worked flawlessly for the day, avoiding mistakes. Apparently he liked it.”
