The Chinese Grand Prix is on the 2023 Formula 1 calendar, but not so long ago championship boss Stefano Domenicali expressed concern that the race, scheduled for April 16, 2023, may not take place due to the country’s coronavirus restrictions. Today there was a message from BBC Sport that the Chinese leg of the championship will be cancelled.
The reason for the cancellation of the Grand Prix is the actions of the Chinese authorities, which have a policy of “zero tolerance” for the corona virus. A major stumbling block is the fact that Formula 1 staff will not be exempt from quarantine requirements in the event they contract Covid-19. Current regulations in China require anyone who tests positive for the coronavirus to spend five days in a special isolation room, plus three days of home isolation.
Formula 1 believes they cannot ask teams to organize a Grand Prix in a country where there is a risk that key employees will not be able to leave the city immediately after the end of the stage if they become infected with Covid-19.
The decision to cancel the 2023 Chinese Grand Prix has not yet been officially decided, but is considered inevitable. Formula 1 declined to comment.
