Mark Genet, who has worked with Ferrari for many years as a test driver and ambassador for the legendary Italian marque, took part in the F1 Nation podcast to briefly recap the season and speak a few words about the testing taking place in Abu Dhabi today.
Marc Genet: “After the last race of the season, everyone at Ferrari is in a great mood. We knew we were ahead of Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship, but we still had the job to do and the team handled it. Charles Leclerc had a great race, the whole team handled perfectly, made excellent pit stops and executed an effective tactical plan.
I understand that no one will later remember who finished second there, but this result will raise the morale of everyone who works at the base in Maranello. People have a short memory, but what happened in the last race is still remembered, and believe me, this result is very important for us. In Abu Dhabi we drove with Red Bull Racing and we managed to get ahead of one of their cars, and this is already a good performance.
This year we made mistakes and above all we failed to achieve the necessary equipment reliability, but we understand this. But first we wanted to achieve high speeds, and only then work on reliability. And in the second half of the season, our cars really became more reliable.
Of course there were miscalculations in terms of strategy, even drivers sometimes made mistakes, but in my opinion the last race of the season showed that we also know perfectly well how to fulfill the tasks imposed. We have learned the necessary lessons and now we have confirmed that we can show good results.
The tests that take place on Tuesday at the Yas Marina circuit are not that important for us. They are more important for those teams where the composition is changing and new drivers are getting to know the cars for the first time – for example, Fernando Alonso, who moved to Aston Martin. But of course we also have to work with the new rubber again and see how it can affect the balance of the chassis. As we prepare for 2023, this will be a rewarding experience.”
