On Friday everyone complained about the rapid tire wear, Pirelli thinks it will not be easy to choose a strategy…
Mario Isola, Pirelli: “Overall, the training was in line with expectations. Tire wear in Barcelona was the second most intense after Bahrain, and the high asphalt temperature, reaching 50 degrees during the day, exacerbated the problems, especially with soft tyres.
The left front tire will be under the heaviest load – its wear will be the limiting factor this weekend. This will likely result in most drivers having two pit stops in the race.
Which strategy they will choose in this case is a big question. Teams must manage tire distribution on Saturday very carefully to maintain exactly the sets of tires they are counting on for the race – with one mandatory set of Medium and Hard to be kept by regulations.
In practice we saw quite a difference in speed between the lineups, much more than we expected this weekend, which will certainly influence decisions about the strategy of the race.
