Max Verstappen set the fifth fastest time in the second practice of the Spanish Grand Prix. The Red Bull Racing driver is pleased with the long-distance speed, but the team has yet to find the settings for a fast lap.
Sergio Perez missed the first practice. The Mexican lost the car to Jüri Vips, a member of the Red Bull youth program, who became the first driver from Estonia to participate in the official session of the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen (5th): “Today it was quite difficult to find the right balance of the car, also because of the heat. Obviously we still need to work on the speed in one fast lap, but the speed in the long series looks pretty confident.
Tires are struggling because of the heat and, as I said, our balance leaves a lot to be desired. In any case, we know that the weather will be stable all three days, so that we can continue working with the settings. The focus should be on speed in a fast lap.”
Sergio Perez (7th): “If you skip the first workout, it seems like time goes by very fast. I had to get up to speed right away and get to work assessing the degradation of rubber. I really only had two laps to get comfortable behind the wheel. In the first lap it was necessary to assess the balance and attack, but by that time the tires were no longer in the best condition.
I am satisfied with the work done on a long series of circles. I hope I can add a quick lap to fight for pole tomorrow. To do this, I plan to work with an empty tank at the start of the third training session to understand which direction to move, but we are quite confident in our abilities.
I was happy to borrow Yuuri’s car in the first session. I think he did a good job and did important work for the team.”
Yuri Vips (20th in the first session): “I had a great experience. Driving at a Grand Prix is unbelievable. I dreamed of this from karting – in the beginning racing was just a hobby for me, but today I got behind the wheel of Formula 1.
The session was tense. The team focused on aerodynamic testing, so they didn’t even plan fast laps for me. Now I understand why Formula 1 is so difficult – because of the hard work!
I had a lot to learn, I went to the races with the team and listened to the feedback from the drivers, but it was very helpful for me to feel the car on the track. This will help with my work on the simulator.”
