Leo Turini on the impending dismissal of Mattia Binotto

Leo Turini, an Italian journalist known for his close ties to the team from Maranello, speaking about the imminent dismissal of Mattia Binotto, concludes that this can only be beneficial for Ferrari rivals.

Now that the separation of Mattia Binotto and Ferrari has become known, I will not bother you with the classic “I told you…”, I will only respond.

For Ferrari, this is a defeat – in less than nine years the team will change leaders for the fourth time. And for John Elkann, the company’s president, it’s a loss. Formally, it was he who appointed engineer Binotto to this position in January 2019. Although I agree it was Sergio Marchionne’s legacy.

But if you are a leader and have ever made such a choice, then you must protect him. President Elkann doesn’t know this or just doesn’t want to do it. He was as stupid as a fish, even when discussing such a hot topic as budget constraints.

This is, of course, a defeat for Binotto. All his life he dreamed of leading the Scuderia, and when he got this position, he wanted to repeat the exploits of Jean Todt, with whom he happened to work in his youth. But it didn’t work out, although it would be more accurate to say he wasn’t given enough time.

Under Todt, the team won the Constructors’ Championship for the first time six and a half years after his appointment. Binotto didn’t even get four years. And now the season is recognized as a failure, in which there were 4 wins and 12 pole positions. It seems someone has gone crazy, but I can’t add much to this just because I don’t know.

But Mattia also had misses. The infamous 2019 biker story called for a more open investigation, even though he wasn’t the one responsible for the scandal in the first place.

He has few friends at the base in Maranello, and he knows it. And he also knows that behind his back they call him “Pharaoh” – he even knows who invented it. Moreover, it was completely in vain that he boasted to the press: it was impossible to say in the very first interview after being appointed team leader: “We are entering a new era.”

Besides, Todt never allowed himself such bravado, even when the team won. I have always believed that heightened attention and exaggeration of one’s own achievements should be avoided, otherwise you risk becoming a caricature, a parody of yourself.

Unfortunately, Binotto’s departure will also be a loss for Charles Leclerc. I’m a fan of his talent and it’s no secret that he has direct personal contact with John Elkann. That is why Leclerc should not have let his environment play a role in the fact that everything ends so sadly for Binotto. He must understand that now they will make him a scapegoat, because Binotto can no longer play the role of lightning rod.

And there is no doubt that what happens will be a defeat for Carlos Sainz, who is also responsible for the dismissal of Mattia. You may ask me: who will be the winner in that case after this ridiculous and unpleasant story?

Red Bull, I’m afraid, although I’d give a lot to be wrong.
