In the world’s most popular racing series – Formula 1, WEC and World Rally – the seasons are over, but that doesn’t mean nothing is happening in the world of motorsport.
Uruguay is hosting the final of the Extreme E electric off-road series this weekend and qualifying took place on Saturday at a very nice track in Punta del Este ahead of the decisive race of the season. Events developed according to a very dramatic scenario – suffice it to say that the two main contenders for victory in the championship fell out of contention in the first part of qualifying after very nice crashes from the track, ending with coups in their off-road electric road vehicles.
It was the championship leaders who were unlucky: the teams of Rosberg X Racing (Nico Rosberg’s team) and X44 (Lewis Hamilton’s team) ran into unpleasant problems – their cars were badly damaged in the first session and they had to make repairs. In addition, the championship team leader of the Rosberg team became a participant in the accident in the second part of qualifying.
Against the background of these events, the Spanish team of 60-year-old Carlos Sainz (Sainz XE Team), two-time World Rally Champion and father of the Ferrari team driver, became the winner in qualifying, in which a very sharp battle unfolded. However, so far this is only a preliminary result as some penalties could still affect Saturday’s official results.
