Pato O’Ward, who plays for the Arrow McLaren SP in IndyCar, dreams of Formula 1 and this year he gained good experience driving McLaren cars: first he met the MCL35M in tests last year and then spent a training session behind the wheel of the MCL36 in Abu Dhabi.
Now the talented and fast Mexican can skillfully draw comparisons between F1 and IndyCar technology, and Pato thinks Daniel Ricciardo would enjoy racing in this overseas series.
“He hasn’t asked me for advice, but I’ve heard he doesn’t want to race on ovals and I respect his position,” O’Ward told the Austrian edition of Motorsport-Magazin. “But I think Daniel would love IndyCar and I’m sure he would fit right in.
I don’t know if he wants to. But I can say that IndyCar and Formula 1 cars are very different, although I think he would love everything because he loves America so much!
I know racing on very fast Superspeedway ovals is dangerous, but in general there are a lot of stories told about these tracks and about ovals in general. In fact, it’s not quite like that. It’s impossible to explain in a short interview, but it’s a great kind of racing, just different. If you start driving ovals more often, you gradually adjust and you realize how special it feels.
Before you close this topic to yourself, at least give it a try because this is a cool experience in its own way. Yes, the speeds are very high there, but I don’t think Daniel will have a problem with that.
In IndyCar, you must master three approaches to piloting. Winning this championship is difficult precisely because you have to master all three disciplines perfectly: Superspeedway, short oval and road-type tracks.
The former are very different from short ovals – I think Roman Grosjean can tell about this. He didn’t want to race there either, but then he tried anyway and realized how great it was. Oval circuits are obviously not forgiving, but I don’t think it matters much if you have an accident with a Formula 1 car at 300 km/h. The speeds are very high everywhere.”
