Mekis: Sainz must be given time to adapt to F1-75

The start of the season for Ferrari drivers was different: if Charles Leclerc leads the championship with 104 points and won two races, then Carlos Sainz takes 5th place in the individual standings and has not yet opened the score of victories.

He is 51 points behind his partner, including through two retirements, but the team is in no rush to rely solely on Leclerc, as Laurent Mekis, Scuderia sports director, said in Barcelona.

Laurent Mekis: “I think it’s too early for that. If you remember last year, there was also a difference in the number of points scored between them at the beginning of the season, but in the end the situation changed completely. Now we are doing everything we can to help Carlos adapt to the car and make him more comfortable in the cockpit.

Last year he performed very confidently and we are confident that he will show better results soon. Now we are only preparing for the sixth race of the 22, so for now we are not going to bet on any rider. The need to solve this problem will only become apparent much later.

Carlos was on the podium three times in five races and I wouldn’t say he has some obvious problems now. But we can already say that the characteristics of the machine do not quite match its preferences. This can be seen in telemetry and is felt by the information Sainz shares with the team.

While we refine the car, we try to make the F1-75 more suitable for him, but at the same time Carlos needs to be given time to adapt to it.
