Pirelli is considering the optimal strategy of two pit stops for tomorrow’s race, although three tire changes are possible.
Better to start on Medium – this will allow you to ride a relatively long first stint, and further strategy will depend on the riders’ remaining tire sets.
In Barcelona, Soft tires have a noticeable speed advantage over Medium tires, although they wear out quickly. The Hard tires can also play a role, but they lose more than a second to the Medium in a round.
Theoretically, the fastest way to cover a race distance is a combination of Medium-Medium-Soft. The second fastest option is Medium-Soft-Soft. A variant with all three compositions is possible – Medium-Hard-Soft, but it will be faster without Hard.
Mario Isola, Pirelli: “A hot and exciting qualifying session where soft tires had to be approached to maximize their potential. Strategy also played a part – Mercedes’ decision to release Leclerc for just one try in the second part of qualifying could diversify its strategy options.
Tire wear will be a factor in tomorrow’s race. The forecast promises even warmer weather, this Grand Prix could be one of the toughest for tires of the season. Strategy and proper distribution of tire sets on the course will play a key role in the race.”
