David Vidales’ first career win brought an end to Saturday’s Formula 3 race in Barcelona. Along with the Campos racer, Red Bull youth program participant Jack Crawford and MP Motorsport driver Chao Collet climbed to the podium.
Under the reverse grid rule, Zane Maloney would start from pole in Saturday’s race, setting the twelfth fastest time in qualifying. However, the Trident rider did not make it to the weigh-in on Friday, for which he was excluded from the qualifying protocol. For example, first place at the start was taken by David Vidales, who qualified 11th.
At the start, Vidales held onto the lead, although Juan Manuel Correa tried to fight for first position. Alexander Smolyar started the race well and moved up from ninth to sixth place.
David Vidales gradually started to create a lead over the pack. The two championship leaders, Arthur Leclerc and Victor Martin, lined the track side by side in the battle for eighth place. Leclerc did not wait for the opponent’s attack and led Oliver Berman, rising to the seventh line.
On lap five, Jack Crawford passed Correa on the start straight without much effort for second. Once on an empty track, Crawford started to close the gap with the leader and showed the best lap.
On the seventh lap, Marten had technical problems – the ART driver lost speed and rolled back to the end of the pack. Victor drove slowly to the pits and exited the race.
On lap ninth, the hood of Franco Colapinto’s car flew, leaving the start straight littered with debris. The driver continued to drive, but the team called him into the pits, where Franco got out.
On lap 12, Crawford overtook Vidales and attempted an attack on his turn. The maneuver failed, Jack went off track and jumped onto the curb. Vidales’ lead grew again to one and a half seconds, but the stewards decided to investigate this incident after the finish.
Chao Collet overtook Kaylen Frederik in the battle for fourth place before the first corner. In the fifteenth lap, Alexander Smolyar overtook Frederik. In the seventeenth round, Kaylen lost another position, skipping Arthur Leclerc.
On lap eighteen, Correa lost third and had to take out Collet in the first corner. Around later, Juan Manuel tried to overtake Smolyar, but the opponent didn’t let Alexander move forward in the first corner. Smolyar had to leave the track, which Leclerc took advantage of and overtook Alexander. The stewards took note of the battle between ART and MP Motorsport racers.
Vidales led the race to victory, beating Jack Crawford by more than a second. Chao Collet finished third, Arthur Leclerc was able to overtake Correa on the last lap in the battle for fourth place.
