F2: Kordil was one step away from disqualification

Amaury Kordil, a 19-year-old Van Amersfoort Racing pilot, was literally one step away from disqualification: he only had one penalty point left and then he would have 12, and this would automatically lead to suspension of performance in one of the races.

In total, the Belgian has scored 11 penalties this season and already started the Spanish youth championship stage with nine, but yesterday he was awarded two more for breaking the starting rules.

En route to the start, by the time the safety car line is crossed, all cars should already be on the track in the order corresponding to their starting position, but Kordil started too late for the warm-up lap. In such a situation, he has to start from the pit lane, just like Calan Williams, whose car came to a stop before the start of this lap.

Amaury received a 10-second Stop&Go penalty and two penalty points. Another foul, which automatically means he has to miss a race.

Significantly, almost all of the penalty points scored by the Belgian were received exactly for different types of violations of the instructions and requirements that the race directors publish and bring to the public’s attention at each stage.

On the stage in Saudi Arabia, for example, he immediately received four penalty points because he did not brake enough when yellow and then red flags appeared on the track during qualifying.

The stewards then warned both the driver and his team, which only debuted in Formula 2 this year, to be more vigilant and follow all the rules prescribed by the signal flags.

At Imola, however, he scored a further five penalty points for systematically breaking track limits, doing so again and again and seemingly trying to change his approach to pilots at all. He was then first given five penalty seconds and one penalty point, then ten more such seconds and two points, and as a result he received a penalty passage through the pits plus two penalty points – when he hit the limits of the track for the sixth time.

In addition, Kordil was fined four times in the first four stages of the season for speeding in the pit lane. In Imola, he managed to accelerate there to almost 100 km / h, although the limit was only 60 km / h. However, there are no penalties for such violations.

There have already been instances in Formula 2 where a driver has scored more than 12 penalty points: in 2019, Mahavir Raghunathan was not even allowed to start twice because he ‘collected’ such points at an astonishing pace.
