IndyCar Series champion Alex Palou has signed a McLaren reserve driver contract for the 2023 season. The Spaniard has become one of the team’s reserves and will perform his duties in all phases of Formula 1, which do not overlap with IndyCar races.
Last season, Palou teamed up with McLaren for the first free practice session of the US Grand Prix in Austin. In addition, Alex took part in private tests with the MCL35M in Barcelona and Spielberg.
Alex Palow: “I am delighted to be joining the McLaren team in 2023 as one of the reserve drivers. I was able to test the MCL35M and MCL36 on the track – it’s been a great experience and now I’m looking forward to getting behind the wheel of next year’s car.
I will continue to develop and appreciate McLaren’s confidence and invitation to a new role next year.”
Andreas Seidl, team principal: “The team is delighted to have Alex as one of the reserve drivers for next season. He impressed us in first practice in Austin and in testing this year. He already has many motorsport achievements to his name, including an IndyCar title in 2021. It is great that he has been able to expand his role in the team and we look forward to working more closely together.”
