Vettel: We didn’t have enough speed to fight for points

The Aston Martin team brought an updated car to the Spanish Grand Prix, but the new items didn’t help earn points. Sebastian Vettel finished eleventh, Lance Stroll fifteenth. The team admitted that the car did not have enough speed to compete for higher positions.

Sebastian Vettel (11th): “Today it all came down to controlling tire wear and traction – the tarmac was very slippery. All the tires had collapsed so a lot of riders went to the pit stops quite early. We decided to do it differently and try to run the race with two pit stops. I don’t think there was any difference in the end.

We simply didn’t have enough speed to fight for points. However, we tried. Eleventh place can’t be called a big prize, but we had a worthy race. We knew that we wouldn’t be able to take a big step forward with the new car right away, but we believe that we have chosen the right development direction.

The team is making progress and moving forward – that’s what counts.”

Lance Walk (15th): “A difficult race that actually ended for me in contact with Pierre Gasly when I overtook him in the first corner. I had to go into the pit lane to check the car – it cost me 30 seconds of loss.

The positive results include the fact that the car was controlled better than in qualifying. It is necessary to analyze our work over the weekend, draw conclusions and use the information received in Monaco.

I look forward to the next race. The stage in Monaco is special – I can’t wait for it to start.”

Mike Krak, Team Principal: “Given our starting positions, 16th Sebastian and 17th Lance, it was difficult to count on points today. However, both riders implemented their tire strategies: Soft-Soft-Medium for Sebastian and Soft-Soft-Medium-Soft for Lance. As a result, Sebastian finished 11th after successfully avoiding traffic, while Lance finished 15th.

In the twenty-eighth lap, Lance lost quite a bit of time due to contact with Pierre Gasly. Not only did he roll backwards, but he also went to the second pit stop ahead of schedule. If he hadn’t, he would have finished several positions higher. Lance was unable to convert the high race pace into points, but we saw the potential of the redesigned car.

Finally, I would like to pay tribute to the excellent work of the team, which was able to prepare two updated cars for this stage. We are looking forward to continuing and looking forward to better results in Monaco and in the next races.”
