Domenicali: The project of the Madrid race must be analyzed

This week, Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, took part in the conference “A global industry and a show that knows no borders” held in Spain, organized by the business community and the government of Navarre.

In his speech, he touched on topics such as the growing popularity of Formula 1, the desire of the organizers of the World Championship to increase the fun of racing and environmental issues.

In particular, he was asked to talk about the prospects of such a project as a race in Madrid.

“I think at the moment I can only say that we have an agreement with the circuit in Barcelona for the next few years, which of course we are very happy with,” said Domenicali. – The proposed racing project in Madrid seems interesting to us, but we still need to work on it to assess its feasibility from a technical and economic point of view.

But this only confirms that the popularity of Formula 1 is growing in Spain, which is quite logical, because Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz are in the championship. All this will of course help to find a solution in the future that is important for the prospects of Formula 1 in Spain.”

The contract with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya runs until 2026, but next spring Formula 1 will open its first official exhibition at the IFEMA complex in Madrid. However, Domenicali ruled out the possibility of holding two World Cup stages in Spain: “In Italy there are now two Grand Prix, but let’s see how it will develop in the future. As we see interest in Formula 1 growing rapidly all over the world, holding two races in the same European country seems too difficult.

In some other countries, for example in the US, the scale is completely different. We really represent the pace of our growth, so it’s very difficult to talk about two races in Spain, and yet we operate on a “never say never” principle.
