Carlos Sainz says the Spanish Ferrari driver has more experience in this uneven year since his debut in the World Championship than in any previous season in Formula 1.
Carlos has been in Formula 1 since 2015 and after three incomplete seasons with Toro Rosso, he moved to Renault – “incomplete” as he spent the last four races of the 2017 season for the French carmaker’s works team. In 2019 Sainz changed teams again, signed a contract with McLaren and in 2021 he became Charles Leclerc’s partner at Ferrari.
But if he was ahead of the Monegasque in the individual standings last year, then in 2022, with the F1-75, Charles fought for victories and race wins from the very start of the season, while Sainz did not immediately approach the car, which more than once led to mistakes and, as a result, to descents. But gradually Carlos was able to understand the characteristics of the new Ferrari car, after which he opened the scoring for pole positions and victories.
When asked to evaluate last season, the Spaniard replied: “The beginning was very difficult, I was immediately at a disadvantage and faced difficulties that I probably did not expect. But to be honest, I’m proud of how I managed to bounce back, that I was able to stay motivated despite all the setbacks we had.
Both the team and I had a lot of retirements but we still managed to turn the tide and now I’m performing at a higher level again – I know I’m capable of that. I intend to stay at this level and all the positive experiences I have gained this year will still serve me well.
Academically, this has been the most rewarding year since my debut in 2015. Since then, some seasons have been tougher, others easier, but 2022 has never been as tough as 2022 for me.
Driving this car, in the first five or six races, I was constantly behind, and when I got into this situation, I had to change a lot in the driving style, in the approach to the car’s settings, so that it would be better suit me. I was also dealing with some muscle memory issues related to the way I fly, and it took a long time to adapt the style.
But then, as soon as everything worked out, I felt that I took a big step forward, worked on myself, improved my professional skills – in general, I learned a lot.
