The Spanish Grand Prix ended with Red Bull Racing’s second win of the season. Thanks to this result, the team took the lead in the Constructors’ Championship. After the finish, leader Christian Horner explained the team’s tactics and the reasons why leader Sergio Pérez was asked to let Max Verstappen continue.
Christian Horner «The race was difficult. It seemed that in the early circles nothing worked for us. Max’s car had problems with DRS and then spun due to a gust of wind in the fourth corner. He resolved the situation and pulled out of the gravel onto the track.
Then he got stuck behind George Russell and then we decided to switch Max to a three-stop strategy. This option turned out to be preferable. Today our car was very, very fast. Too bad Charles stopped as it could have been a really interesting fight with him in the second half of the race.
I have to thank Sergio for the team play. Today our riders weren’t fighting each other, they had different strategies and he did a fantastic job. There was an overheating problem and the last thing we wanted was to drop out with 1st and 2nd place.
Like I said, the riders had different strategies, so they didn’t fight directly. Sergio’s tires wouldn’t last until the end, so shortly before the finish he drove into the pits and showed the best lap. Sergio couldn’t see how long he was on the Medium tires and how much advantage Max was having with the tires. As a team we had to avoid risks.”
