News broke on Sunday of the death of Patrick Tambay, a former Formula 1 driver who was once a very popular figure in the paddock, although he has only two wins to his name. But he was a great professional and a good person, so all the teams associated with his name considered it their duty to honor his memory.
McLaren: “The news of Patrick Tambay’s passing has saddened us all. He was a talented driver who drove for McLaren in 1978 and 1979. All our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
Ferrari: “It is with deep sadness that we learn the news of Patrick Tambay’s passing. In the 1980s he was one of the real stars, winning two races, speaking for the Scuderia, in 1982 and 1983. He won the Constructors’ Championship and there was his contribution.”
Alpine F1 Team: rest in peace Patrick Tambay. You will be with us forever, with the Alpine-Renault family.”
Speaking on behalf of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of the championship, said a few words: “I was saddened by the news of Patrick Tambay’s departure. A truly talented driver, he has been an ambassador for Formula 1 all his life. We will all miss him and all our thoughts and prayers during these sad days are with his family and friends.”
FIA President Mohammed bin Sulayem expressed his condolences on behalf of the entire motorsport community: “The passing of Patrick Tambay, who won two times in Formula 1 and competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, has deeply saddened me. The whole FIA community pays tribute to his memory, he lived a great life…”
