The Alpine F1 finished the season in 4th place in the Constructors’ Championship, ahead of McLaren, and for Renault’s French factory team, this is a significant achievement. The last time she reached this line of the team standings was in 2018, when Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz played for her.
Of course, Alpine dreams of victories, especially Esteban Ocon, who already knows the taste of prize champagne, because last year the French racer won the Hungarian Grand Prix. And even if circumstances contributed to this, Esteban sincerely hopes that he and his team can gradually close the gap to the leaders and become a real force in Formula 1.
“Personally I think the season was worthy and this view is shared by our entire team,” Okon said in an interview with RacingNews365. But we got off to a worse start than we wanted. We were behind Haas and Alfa Romeo because the performance of our car left something to be desired.
I quickly understood what the problems were, we shared this with the team and they were able to translate all this into technical innovations, which helped us enormously. Because we understood what was holding us back and at the same time were modernizing the A522, I really felt I could improve.
In many races I felt like we were one with the car, and then I was able to get the most out of it, this allowed me to finish in the top four or five and we earned a lot of points.
The team’s strategy has always been to create a powerful engine so that the car is immediately fast and competitive. From the very beginning we would attack, and of course this is fraught with reliability issues.
We understood this, that’s why of course we lost points in some races, but still managed to get 4th place at the end of the season. I hope we can get closer to the leaders next season, this is my goal, and on the simulator the 2023 car is already making a very encouraging impression.
Of course we try to avoid high expectations, but it looks like we’ve taken a step in the right direction and I can’t wait to see what we can achieve. If the technical regulations remain stable, all teams will progress steadily and it is hoped that at some point we can catch up with the leaders.
