At the Monaco Grand Prix, tire manufacturers from Pirelli are bringing out the three softest compounds – C3, C4 and C5. The head of the Italian company’s racing division, Mario Isola, explained why such a choice was dictated.
Mario Isola“The Monaco race is often called the most unpredictable of the year, but the reality is that the result is largely dependent on qualifying as the starting position is crucial. As a result, an important task in free practice will be to understand the features of the softest composition C5, which was used only once this season – in Australia.
With the rule that riders must start on the set they set the best time in the second qualifying session has been removed, we may see different strategy options this year. Some riders may choose to start with stiffer tires for the long first stint given the difficulty of overtaking.
Others may prefer the more traditional approach of starting on the softest tires. In Monaco, strategy can really make the difference.”
