Formula 2 driver suspended for speeding

Formula 2 driver Amaury Kordil, who will drive for Virtuosi Racing next season, has lost his driver’s license due to speeding. The Belgian clocked up to 179 km/h in his hometown of Thames on a road with a speed limit of 50 km/h.

The traffic violation already took place in December 2020, but the court did not rule until December 2022. In addition to losing his driver’s license for six months, Kordil must pay a fine of 3,600 euros.

Kordil’s violation became known from a video that the rider himself posted on TikTok. The video has now been removed, but the Belgian newspaper HLN managed to pay attention to it, after which the local police became interested in the case.

During the court hearing, Cordil’s lawyer insisted that the police did not have sufficient evidence that his client was at the wheel, as the car formally belongs to the racer’s father. Amaury himself built his defense on the fact that at the time of the offense he did not yet have a driver’s license, but according to the same HLN, Kordil bought a driver’s license on the Internet for 450 euros, and hid this fact from the judge.

It is currently unknown how Virtuosi Racing has reacted to the court ruling against their driver, but Formula 2 promoter Bruno Michel has already promised to discuss with the FIA what happened.

“We need to discuss with the FIA what happened to understand how to proceed and whether any special measures need to be taken. There is no doubt that we cannot ignore what happened,” said Bruno Michel.

Amaury Kordil was suspended from Formula 2 last season and missed the round at Silverstone as he scored 12 penalty points in the opening six rounds.
