George Russell: Tough season brought the team together

Following the results of his first season with Mercedes, George Russell Lewis Hamilton was ahead of the individual standings, earning 35 points more than his partner. Good relations have developed between the British racers, but George believes things could have been different if they had had a really fast car at their disposal.

George Russell: “I think the dynamic between me and Lewis would be a little different if we came to the first race of the season with the fastest car in the championship. During the season, we repeatedly stayed on track at night and worked with the engineers to understand whether we were going in the right direction or whether we should try a different approach. Should we be more aggressive?

Sometimes the discussions were difficult, but in the meantime they brought the team together. Mercedes has strong leaders and now we are all doing our best and moving in the right direction. I am confident that the team’s experience gained this year will lead us to long-term success.

I believe you have to lose to get maximum progress and further wins. Last season I had both defeats and some success. We are all with Mercedes to win. The team has won the title for eight years in a row and we don’t like that we couldn’t win again.

On the other hand, we have shown high stability of results, but we are in Formula 1 not for the sake of stability, but for the wins. I believe that sometimes you have to take risks to succeed, but at the same time, when you make mistakes, that’s when you make the most progress.”
