The 2023 Formula 1 season should be a record number of 24 stages, but last week it became known about the cancellation of the Chinese Grand Prix. Several replacement options are discussed in the European press, but most likely there will be no replacement.
Several circuits have already expressed interest in replacing the Chinese Grand Prix, but so far no negotiations have been held in Formula 1. Among the candidates in the press, the Portimão circuit is mentioned, but on the same dates as the Chinese Grand Prix, the FIA WEC round is on the program at this Portuguese circuit. It is unlikely that the FIA will agree to remake two calendars at once so that Formula 1 comes to Portugal.
In addition, holding the race in Portimão does not seem entirely logical logistically – after Melbourne, Formula 1 will have to go to the west of Europe, and from there – to the east to Baku. It is possible that the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will be moved to the slot of the Chinese Grand Prix, but it remains an open question whether the race’s promoters will agree.
Formula 1 management is keeping a low profile to quietly explore all available options. However, there are only four months to go until the proposed race and voices are becoming increasingly certain in the paddock that there will be no replacement for the canceled Chinese Grand Prix and that the season will be reduced to 23 stages.
