Formula 1 has officially confirmed that in 2023 the six stages of the season will be run in a Friday qualifying and Saturday sprint format. Sprints are scheduled for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Austrian Grand Prix, Belgian Grand Prix, Qatar Grand Prix, US Grand Prix and Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
The sprint courses have been selected based on the results of research aimed at determining the most appropriate options for this weekend format. Overtaking opportunities and tight fighting were taken into account, as well as the presence of high-speed sections.
Formula 1 studies have shown that the sprint format attracts more fan attention. So in 2022 the television audience of the Austrian Grand Prix grew by 39% compared to the 2021 stage, which was run in the same format. Overall, sprint formats generated 8% more TV viewers compared to 2021.
Stefano DomenicaliHead of Formula 1: “We saw overwhelmingly positive reactions to sprint weekends in the first two years, so next season this will be increased to six, including the first such round in the US in Austin.
Thanks to this format, there is now a battle on the track on each of the three days of the race weekend, which fans like. In addition, sprints are in the hands of teams, TV companies, partners and stage promoters.”
Mohammed bin Sulayem“Thanks to the close cooperation between the FIA and FOM, and subsequent World Council approval, we are delighted to confirm six sprints in the 2023 season. We look forward to these exciting additions to the calendar.”
