In his column on his son’s official website, Jos Verstappen summed up the results of the Spanish Grand Prix…
Have a nice weekend in Barcelona. If Max wins, I’m okay with it too. It was very hot, which made it difficult to work with tires, and then Max had problems with the DRS system, which didn’t work. You could hear the disappointment in his voice, and I saw it in his steering.
He started to attack more aggressively, he wanted more. This management style has brought him many victories in the past. Max made a mistake and got into the gravel and then got stuck behind George Russell. He wanted to move forward as quickly as possible, but we saw once again that overtaking in Formula 1 is not possible without DRS.
I have to say that in my opinion Red Bull has found the best solution to Max’s problems. They changed strategy and gave him soft tires on the third stint, he could go faster and lead the race.
I understand his frustration at the start of the race. When things go wrong because of problems, he openly expresses his displeasure. There’s nothing wrong. He demands the maximum from the team, and the team from him. That’s why they are so successful together.
I think Red Bull knows the cause of the problems with DRS. This isn’t the first time this has happened. I think they will find a solution. This is a technical sport where anything is possible. And not just with us, as we saw last weekend. I’m happy that Max is leading the championship now, but next week everything could change. Ferrari cars are very fast, especially in qualifying. In one fast lap they have the best car and Max is very strong in the race when there are no technical problems. His retirements have helped Ferrari a lot in the past.
I expect Ferrari to be strong again in Monaco. Another very interesting weekend awaits us. In Barcelona it became clear that Mercedes had made a big step forward, but in the race they were tenths behind us on lap four. They have something to work on, but we are not sitting still.”
