The resignation of Mattia Binotto as head of the Ferrari team is the most talked about news of Formula 1 in recent times. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff called Binotto’s departure inevitable and was surprised he had not been sacked sooner.
Toto Wolff: “It was always clear that Mattia was working under enormous pressure. As the head of Ferrari you always have to have a good contract in case you leave. The inevitable happened, but it took longer than I thought.
When you represent Ferrari, you represent a country. You are first praised and then thrown all the way to the bottom. When an Italian is at the head of a Ferrari, the pressure on him is even greater. A foreigner may not read the local press, but an Italian is always in the line of fire.”
When asked if he would be willing to invite Mattia Binotto to join Mercedes, Toto Wolff replied: “No. I think too many lines have been broken between us in recent years to allow for such a collaboration.
It’s no secret that Mattia and I have been at odds over the years, but in 2022 we’ve come to some sort of balance. Our relationship is much better now.”
Toto Wolff added that if he had ever been offered an offer to lead Ferrari, he would not have turned down such an opportunity: “Anyone who claims that he is not interested in the position of head of Ferrari is simply telling a lie.
I still pinch myself to make sure Daimler has given me the opportunity to become managing partner and co-owner of the team. I am very proud of it. But if I had ever received an offer from Ferrari, my reaction would have been exactly the same.
