In 2022, Mercedes finished the season without winning the Drivers’ or Constructors’ Championship for the first time in eight years. Team boss Toto Wolff hopes that with the experience gained he can fight for the title again next year.
Toto Wolff: “We have been wondering for eight years how we will react to a defeat? It was clear that sooner or later this would happen – and that day had come.
I’m proud of how the team handled and recovered during the season, because the lack of speed was not an isolated case. We didn’t have a clear trajectory to the top – we had some successful races, but then we pulled out. However, at the end of the season we were already much closer to the leaders than at the start.
Mistakes and failures are inevitable on the road to success. As they say, the opponents will still regret the days when we lost, because on such days the team learns the most. I hope the future will prove the truth of this sentence.
For me the glass is always half empty because I always see the risks. If you look objectively at the facts, it becomes clear that Red Bull dominated the entire season. It will be very difficult for us to progress as fast as they and Ferrari, but I believe in our team.
This year it wasn’t about a fundamental lack of downforce – our difficulty was how to make this downforce work. With our knowledge, mindset and no-blame culture I think we will be back in a more competitive shape next year. I hope we will rightly win races and fight for the title. But are there such guarantees? Of course not”.
