Klia: We spent all the money on the car too early.

Ferrari started the 2022 season strongly, scoring two wins in the first three races, but gradually the team’s advantage faded. Jock Klia, Scuderia’s chief race engineer, said the team had not properly planned the amount of spending to upgrade the car during the season due to budget constraints.

The team spent the most money at the start of the season, while Red Bull Racing was able to spread the cost of the car more evenly, allowing constant progress.

“Last season’s challenge was to spend money in the most efficient and effective way,” says Jock Klia. All expenses had to be planned in advance. As the season progressed, maybe not all the decisions we made earlier turned out to be right.

Red Bull responded very well to the problems that arose, but at the same time they did not lose sight of the need for further improvement of the car. This year we did everything we planned, but in Formula 1 results are always relative.

In fact, we were behind Red Bull in the second half of the season, but we weren’t the only ones who had problems. Mercedes, for example, added too late, if you know what I mean.

When we talk about the top three teams, we attacked too early, Mercedes too late and Red Bull managed to find the right balance. We have to draw conclusions.”
