Formula E: ABT cooperates with Cupra

In the ninth season of Formula E, the ABT Sportsline team returns to the electric car racing world championship, but if it worked with Audi until 2021, it has now enlisted the support of another car manufacturer – from now on it will be called the ABT Cupra Formula E -team.

Cupra is a premium brand of the Spanish SEAT, which has become a separate division since 2018, including all its sports programs, now united under the banner of Cupra Racing. ABT Cupra cars will take to the track for the first time in a few days during pre-season testing in Valencia, but the two brands are already teaming up quite successfully in another electric series – Extreme E, where the ABT Cupra XE team won the last race won in Uruguay.

Hans-Jürgen Abt, CEO of ABT SE: “We are delighted to return to Formula E with the support of Cupra. Our two brands have had a successful partnership, both on the track and on the road, and are now taking it to the next level.

We are preparing for new adventures and I am sure our team will attract a lot of attention.”

Jamie Reigl, Executive Director of Formula E: “We are delighted to welcome Cupra to our championship, this company has gained a lot of experience in electric car racing over the past few years. Now, in collaboration with ABT Sportline, they are preparing for the 9th season of Formula E, which will be marked by an incredibly intense rivalry.”

The design of the team’s car is inspired by the design of the Cupra UrbanRebel electric concept car, which will enter series production in 2025.

ABT Cupra will be driven by Robin Frijns, who joined the new team from Envision, as well as 30-year-old Swiss driver Nico Müller, who has already worked in other Formula E teams but is best known for his success in the DTM. where he became vice-champion twice, in 2019-m and 2020.

The ABT team has competed in Formula 1 since 2014, the first season of the electric series, but skipped last season and now returns to this championship, using Mahindra’s chassis and power units.
