At the end of the year, two remarkable events took place in motorsport, completely unrelated: Mattia Binotto left the post of head of the Ferrari team and the German company ITR, which for many years was the promoter of the popular DTM touring car series, announced its closure.
But after that, talks began that Gerhard Berger, who has headed the ITR since 2017, would fit very well in the role of head of the Scuderia, as he has the necessary experience, authority and knowledge of Italian specifics, having once played for Ferrari in Formula 1.
However, the 63-year-old Austrian has made it clear that this is not in his plans, and he will no longer take permanent positions in motorsport projects.
Gerhard Berger: “It became clear that ITR would have to be dissolved when the German National Automobile Club ADAC informed us during the negotiations that it was interested in taking over the DTM brand, but refused to take over the company as they have their own staff and all necessary structures.
I’m not going to do DTM in the future, it’s not in my plans and it doesn’t meet my goals. But for me personally it is very important that we have been able to come to a solution together with ADAC.
I am always offered to participate in various interesting projects, but no permanent positions in motorsport are now included in my personal life plans.
