Sebastian Vettel called Daniel Ricciardo many times over the past season to support him in some way – especially at a time when the Australian was struggling with McLaren over the team’s decision to terminate his contract ahead of schedule.
“He called me a lot this year, simply because he’s my friend and because he wanted to show he cares,” Daniel told the Australian edition of Speedcafe. “That’s what real friends do and it’s very important that I have them, although that doesn’t happen very often in motorsport.
The riders are bound by normal friendly relations, but in such a way that they develop into a stronger friendship… And this year, Sebastian made some special gestures and treated me with special kindness – on the one hand, it was somehow way unexpected, on the other hand – extremely pleasant.
Obviously we spoke most often around the time there were negotiations with McLaren, when there was a lot of buzz around my contract. I don’t want to single out Sebastian, because some other riders also expressed their support, but of course it was he who often called me and asked how I was doing.
I really appreciate what he did for me. I think Sebastian is a very caring person who cares about our sport in general, but he also cares about us riders. Of course we are all rivals, but in my opinion he certainly knows how to share this and just shows his concern for us.
