Mohammed bin Sulayem, summarizing his first year as president of the FIA, stressed the importance of strict control over Formula 1 to avoid all kinds of unwanted consequences.
The end of the 2021 championship was ambiguous, but conflicting situations arose on more than one occasion over the course of last season as the work of the FIA came under fire – this was the case, for example, in Monaco, Monza and Suzuka. In addition, many questions arose due to the approach of the federation to the procedure with Red Bull Racing, which committed a violation of the financial regulations.
Mohammed bin Sulayem, however, defended the FIA at a press conference in Bologna ahead of the gala ceremony and spoke very emotionally.
“Formula 1 is the highest category of motorsport and you can always find some controversy about it,” he said. “Teams perform at their best and always want to find a way to do better. In general, everything is always difficult there.
The championship is now developing well, everything is going well, but at the same time we as the FIA have to act with caution. There is a financial side to the matter, but the management of Formula 1 must also be in good order, without rules it is impossible, and those rules must be continuously adjusted and improved.
If there are no rules, what can everything turn into? Will it be like wrestling? Like in WWE, where there’s no control? No, there must be control. I understand that the FIA is facing a very difficult task: improving the rules, bringing them into line with the requirements of the times.
Of course, the teams, the technologies they use – all this does not stand still, but we must not only be at their level, but be ahead of all these processes. This includes both the rules and the financial side of things.
Some of the problems of the FIA are inherited, because you can’t make decisions without doing a thorough analysis, without studying all the facts – only then can you move on. It’s been a tough year and I’m not just talking about Formula 1, but the FIA in general, because it is a very complex organization.
For example, if you take football and look at the rules, there is a single target size, a certain size of the ball, and everyone likes to watch this game. But at least look at karting: imagine what kind of regulations there are. Imagine all the championships held under the auspices of the FIA. No need to talk about Formula 1 – look at rallies and other series. Every day is a kind of test for us, but it is an interesting challenge.”
