Kevin Magnussen prepares for GT race in Abu Dhabi

This year’s 12 Hours of the Gulf endurance race will be held for the 11th time; in 2022 it will be hosted at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi. The first training sessions were held there yesterday and on Saturday evening 34 crews that had registered to participate in these competitions will compete for qualification.

We talked about the fact that Kevin Magnussen will participate in the race in the same team as his father: the Dane will make a kind of debut in the MDK Motorsports team in a Ferrari 488 GT3.

Jan Magnussen also once competed in Formula 1, although not for long, but he became a recognized master of endurance racing, suffice it to say, he has four victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in GTS and GT1 classes as part of the American team Corvette Racing.

Kevin also has experience in “long” races, as last year he competed in the overseas IMSA series and made his debut at Le Mans, where he also raced in the same crew in the LMP2 class with his father. In 2022, Magnussen Jr. being part of the factory Peugeot team that returned to the WEC, but his career took an unexpected turn and he returned to Formula 1.

But Kevin loves motorsport so much that even after a long and tiring season in F1, he didn’t deny himself the joy of performing at the 12 Hours of the Gulf.

“We can only do a few laps in this car before we start in Abu Dhabi, but of course I’m looking forward to it,” said Kevin. “I always enjoy racing with my dad, it’s a very special experience. He is not that old yet and I think we should make the most of this opportunity while he is in shape and can show good speeds.

It’s the first time we’re driving a GT car together – I think it won’t be easy to beat him, but we’ll see!”

Qualifying at the Yas Marina circuit is currently in full swing; after three sessions, crew no. 43, in which Magnussena’s father and son act, is in penultimate, 9th in the GT3 Pro class and 15th in the overall standings.
