Mattia Binnotto will continue to formally lead the Ferrari team until the end of the year, but then he will have to look for a new job. We’ve already mentioned that Audi is interested in the services of this highly experienced engineer, but Swiss tabloid Blick, usually well-informed about what’s happening at the Sauber Motorsport base in Hinwil, has added a few new details.
Audi is already gearing up to enter F1 in 2026 in an alliance with Sauber, and Binotto has been offered the position of head of technology for at least that preliminary period. But according to Blick, according to rumors, Binotto is ready to pay a million euros to Binotto, if only he does not start working in a new place until next summer.
When it comes to the transition from one current team to another, a mandatory “sabbatical” is a natural measure, but the Audi option is still a different case, because we are talking about a project that will only take three years be implemented. One way or another soon enough we will find out how further events will develop. But it can be unequivocally stated that Binotto’s experience and knowledge, which he has accumulated over a quarter of a century of work at Ferrari and Audi, will be very useful.
Of course, everyone is also interested in the question of who will take his place in the Scuderia. There are many rumors on this subject, but the most likely candidate is 54-year-old Frederic Vasseur, the head of the team, which is still called Alfa Romeo.
He has a long and very good relationship with Charles Leclerc, who once, in 2016, became champion of the youth GP3 series, speaking for ART, the team of Vasseur and Nicolas Todt. And when Charles entered Formula 1, he made his debut in Sauber, which was already under the management of Frederic Vasseur. But if the French manager really leads the Ferrari team, then this most difficult task, without any exaggeration, will require complete self-denial and he will have to somehow manage his other affairs.
Vasser not only manages the team from Hinvil, but also looks after the careers of several drivers, most notably Formula 2 vice champion Theo Purscher.
In addition, he founded Spark Racing Technology in 2012, which builds chassis for Formula E teams, and Frédéric Vasseur still heads the supervisory board of this French company. Most likely, if he becomes Maranello’s new team leader, he will no longer be a match for Formula E.
